Congress leadership

The All India Congress Committee (AICC) unveiled its second list of candidates for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in Assam. Addressing a press conference in New Delhi on March 12, party general secretary KC Venugopal disclosed the names of 12 contenders for various constituencies, while leaving the Lakhimpur seat without a designated candidate.

The Congress party, aiming to contest 13 out of the 14 Lok Sabha seats in Assam, has reserved one seat in Dibrugarh for its ally, the Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP). Notably, the AICC has refrained from nominating anyone for the Lakhimpur constituency.

The list of candidates announced includes notable figures such as Gaurav Gogoi for Jorhat, Mira Borthakur for Guwahati, Pradyut Bordoloi for Nagaon, Rakibul Hussain for Dhubri, Joyram Engleng for Diphu, Garjon Mashhary for Kokrajhar, Madhav Rajbongshi for Darrang-Udalguri, Premlal Gunju for Sonitpur, Surjya Kumar Sarkar for Silchar, Hafiz Rashid Choudhury for Karimganj, Deep Bayan for Barpeta, and Roselina Tirkey for Kaziranga.

Meanwhile, the BJP has already declared 11 candidates for the Lok Sabha elections in Assam, setting aside the remaining three seats for its allies, the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and the United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL).
