Manipur begins deportation of Myanmar nationals

Seven Myanmar nationals who entered Manipur illegally were on March 8 deported with officials saying that it was the first batch of 78 foreigners to be deported in the next four days.

An official source said that the seven Myanmar nationals were taken up to Moreh by a chopper from where they would be handed over to the officials of the Myanmar authorities at the Indo-Myanmar border gate.

A total of 78 Myanmar nationals who were in the foreigner detention centre in Imphal will be deported in batch-wise from March 8 to March 11.

Among the 78 foreigners to be deported in the next four days included 51 women, five children and 22 men.

The first batch of seven Myanmar nationals (women and children) was taken to Moreh by a chopper from Imphal airport. The immigrant office on the Indian side will hand them over to the Myanmar authorities.

“First batch of Myanmar nationals who entered India illegally deported today,” Manipur chief minister Biren Singh wrote in his Facebook page.

Singh added: “Although India is not a signatory to the 1951 Refugee Convention, it has given shelter & aid to those fleeing the crisis in Myanmar on humanitarian grounds with a systematic approach.”

An official source said that a total of 78 Myanmar nationals who entered Manipur illegally will be deported from March 8 to March 11, in batches.
