Seven Assam boxers have confirmed medals by entering the semifinals of the ongoing REC Eastern Open Talent Hunt Programme for Youth and Elite (men and women) that is being held at the DTRP Indoor Stadium in Guwahati on March 15.
Four boxers in youth boys and three boxers in elite women have achieved the feat. On the other hand, nine Assam boxers have qualified for the pre-quarterfinals in the elite men’s category.
More than 1000 boxers from all corners of the country are participating in the open championship organised by the Sports Authority of India (SAI) and the Boxing Federation of India (BFI) in collaboration with REC Limited under the Ministry of Power.
The tournament serves as a platform for participants to exhibit their prowess and potentially earn invitations to join the trials for inclusion in BFI’s national camps.

Youth Boys (4 Assam boxers entered the semifinals)
In 48-51 kg: Ohidur Rahaman of Assam defeated Biswajit Daimary of Nagaland. In 60-63 kg: Junaid Anand of Assam beat Yogesh of Haryana. In 67-71 kg: Yuvraj Yadav beat Bishal Biswas both Assam. In 75-80 kg: Nirban Jyoti Gogoi defeated Sagar Kumar of Haryana.
Elite Women (3 Assam boxers are in the semifinals)
In 50-52 kg: Bhupali of Assam defeated Simran of Delhi. In 54-57 kg: Aroti defeated Priya Basunatary (both Assam); Manju Basumatary of Assam defeated Preeti of Haryana.
Elite Men (9 Assam boxers are qualified for pre-quarterfinals)
In 46-48 kg: Chitra Raj of Assam beat Bikramjit Sing of Manipur. (48-51kg) Sunar Kalyan defeated Sagar Swargiary (both from Assam); Gourav Muzumdar of Assam beat Shyam Singh of Manipur. In 51-54 kg: Aman Ali of Assam beat Shivam Rawat of Haryana. In 57-60 kg: Rahul Kumar of Assam beat Ashpak Hudedamni of Karnataka. In 63 -67 kg: Lachit Basumatary defeated Rishad Hamed (both from Assam). In 71-75 kg: Manjeet of Assam defeated Rohit of Haryana; Bijay Deka of Assam defeated Aryan of Haryana. In 75-80 kg: Hemant beat Dhritiman Bhatacharyya both Assam.
