Hundreds of houses damaged by hailstorm in Mizoram

At least 650 houses, including 51 in Tualpui and Vanka villages of Khawzawl district in Mizoram, have been ravaged by rain accompanied by hailstorm and gusty wind on Saturday morning April 27.

Reports said that 24 houses were destroyed in Tualpui and 27 were damaged in Vankal village when a heavy hailstorm hit the two villages on April 27.

Khawzawl deputy commissioner K Lalrohlua said silpaulins have been distributed to the affected families while GCI roofs will be distributed soon for reconstruction of the damaged homes. Lalrohlua said financial assistance will be given to the affected families from the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF).

Hailstorm also devastated Manipur border Vanbawng, Sunhluchhip and Khawlian villages on April 24. At least 54 houses were damaged by hailstorm at Vanbawng and 56 houses at Sunhluchhip village. Also, 25 houses were damaged by the hailstorm in Khawlian village. Villagers have been helping the affected families voluntarily to rebuild or repair the damaged homes.

Earlier, one person was injured and at least 456 houses were damaged in heavy hailstorm and thunderstorm in 4 districts of Mizoram which hit the state on April 20, 21 and 22.

The area affected the by recent hailstorm, are 4 districts located in northern and northeastern parts of the state. The districts are, Kolasib, Aizawl, Champhai and adjoining Khawzawl.
