Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge (centre) in Barpeta, Assam

Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge addressed a public gathering in Barpeta, Assam, where he criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, accusing them of favouring industrialists Mukesh Ambani and Gautam Adani at the expense of public interest.

Kharge asserted that the BJP-led government is detrimental to the country’s development, alleging that they have been selling off government-owned enterprises to Adani and Ambani while neglecting the needs of the poor and farmers.

He praised the contributions of former Prime Ministers Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi, crediting them for initiatives like the Green Revolution and the White Revolution, which bolstered food security and agricultural productivity in India.

Mallikarjun Kharge promised various development initiatives for Assam if the Congress-led coalition comes to power, including infrastructure improvements, healthcare enhancements, and support for Anganwadi and Asha workers.

Assam witnessed a significant turnout in the second phase of polling, with voter percentages ranging from 73.11% to 80.56%. The upcoming third phase of polls is scheduled for May 7 across four Lok Sabha seats in the state.
