During the shooting of Baruar Xongxar (House of Baruas)

‘The House of Baruas’ (Baruar Xongxar), a documentary is set to be featured at the New York Indian Film Festival (NYIFF) on June 1. Directed by national award-winning filmmaker Utpal Borpujari, the documentary delves into the rich history of a century-old Assam-type house in Guwahati that has significantly contributed to Assamese cinema.

The House of Baruas has been instrumental in nurturing talent that has made a profound impact on Assamese cinema. Over the years, this house has produced 30 feature films, and fostered four directors, two music composers, three singers, four actors, and four actresses, among others.

Notably, some of these individuals have also excelled in diverse fields beyond cinema, including cricket, football, politics, and more.

Utpal Borpujari‘s documentary promises to offer an insightful exploration of the legacy and multifaceted contributions of ‘The House of Baruas’ to Assamese cultural heritage.

The House of Baruas’ was also screened at the coveted Indian Panorama of the 54th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in November last year.

Its screening at the NYIFF, organized by the Indo-American Arts Council (IAAC), highlights the international significance of Assamese cinema and the enduring influence of regional filmmaking on a global stage.

For over 22 years, IAAC has tirelessly promoted, celebrated, and supported Indian culture and art forms throughout the New York Tri-State Area.
