In an unfortunate incident, an election official suffered a stroke moments before the start of voting for the 18th Lok Sabha and the state legislative assembly in Arunachal Pradesh on April 19.

The incident happened at the Daggong polling station under Tuting-Yingkiong assembly constituency in Arunachal’s Upper Siang district.

“Presiding officer Sanjay Paul, in his fifties, suffered a sudden stroke this morning while briefing his subordinates prior to the start of the voting process. The critically ill Paul was immediately rushed to Pasighat-Bakin Pertin General Hospital in neighbouring East Siang district,” an official in the office of Upper Siang district election officer (DEO), Yalik Jerang, has said.

Paul is serving as a junior engineer in the Arunachal government’s public works department. He is presently posted at the PWD Mariang division office in Upper Siang, she informed.

Arunachal Pradesh votes simultaneously to elect 50 members of the 60-member state assembly (as 10 members of the house have already been elected unopposed) and two Lok Sabha MPs.
