Heavy rainfall and hailstorm damaged large numbers of houses and uprooted trees in Manipur on May 5.

Electricity supply was affected and many houses were blown away.

Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh in a message on a social media network said all the district officials have been asked to submit a report of damages.

Traffic was disrupted as debris were scattered on the roads.

Photographs of the incident soon went viral on the social media.

In many areas the hails formed a thick white blanket.

The state government has issued an urgent assistance alert.

“In the wake of the recent hailstorm impacting several areas across Manipur, our priority is ensuring swift assistance for those in need. To extend support, we’ve established helpline numbers in various districts,” said the government in a statement.

“All schools and colleges will remain closed on 6th May and 7th May, 2024 due to the prevailing weather conditions in the state. The decision has been taken as a precautionary measure against the risks posed by the current weather conditions. I urge all to stay updated and remain safe indoors. The state government is taking all necessary measures to protect lives & properties and assist those who have been affected,” tweeted CM Biren Singh.
