A 74-year-old Novel Coronavirus positive patient from Rongli in Sikkim has died at a government hospital, officials informed on July 26.

This is the first reported death of a COVID-19 patient in the state.

Officials said that the patient was suffering from hypertension, loose motion and diabetes besides testing positive for COVID-19.

He was shifted to hospital at night and later to ICU where he expired in the morning. “As per standard operating procedure, his death rites will be performed by Gangtok Municipal Corporation,” informed Health Secretary Pempa Tshering.

Lok Sabha MP Indra Hang Subba condoled the death. He has urged all “to stand together despite political affiliation, religion or race” against the virus.

“Coronavirus does not distinguish who is who. It knows only humans. More than policy today, what we need is individual responsibility and humanity,” he said.
