Election Commission

Election Commission of India (ECI) on April 13 warned the BJP candidate for the East Tripura parliamentary constituency, Kriti Devi Debbarman, to abstain from offensive remarks against the opposition parties that attracted violations of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) of the election.

Returning officer of East Tripura, Saju Vaheed A, in an order said that Kriti Devi Debbarman, in an election rally on April 8 in Fatikroy under Unakoti district, had made an objectionable statement that was reported in the local media.

Meanwhile, leader of opposition, Jitendra Chaudhury, moved to the ECI against Debbarman, alleging that while addressing the rally, she referred to CPI-M as a gang of murderers and the party of killers. Chaudhary demanded action against Kriti Singh Debbarman for her “baseless” statement against a nationally recognized party like CPI-M, which is against the standard election rules.

Accordingly, ECI sought report from the sector officer, and the commission’s videography. Accordingly, she was served notice and the order was passed.

The order warned that if she makes such a mistake in the future, appropriate action will be taken against her as per law.

However, the state BJP neither censored her statement nor reacted to the ECI warning.

The opposition CPI-M and Congress welcomed the action of ECI.
